Gardener's World

Some of the best gardens...

Cornwall was made for gardens and Fowey is perfectly placed for visiting the big two - namely The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Whilst Eden is an awe-inspiring natural wonder, The Lost Gardens of Heligan are a labour of love.  Heligan is one of the most mysterious estates in England.  It has been in the hands of the Tremayne family for more than 400 years and its 100 acres of glorious gardens were brought back to live by Sir Tim Smit (founder of The Eden Project) and John Willis, a descendant of the Tremayne family.

The gardens at National Trust property Lanhydrock House are also provide a magnificent floral display amidst  formal and country gardens.

Pine Lodge Gardens are situated on the warm and sheltered south coast of St.Austell Bay that provides excellent growing conditions for rare, unusual and tender plants. Many have been grown from seed from plant hunting expeditions all over the world to which Shirley, lady of the manor, has been contributing since 1985.

The collection at Pine Lodge Gardens now stands at well over 6,000 plants, all labelled, in over 30 acres of gardens, and it is being added to each year. Shirley is extremely interested and involved in cultivating as many rare plants as possible for added interst in the Gardens and for sale in the Nursery.

And certainly not forgetting...

There are also some more Cornish garden gems that shouldn't be forgotten.

A little hidden gem is the Headland Garden at Polruan, opposite Fowey. Thanks to the sensible feature of many discreet benches throughout this beautiful rock garden, there are lots of spots to take the weight off your feet and appreciate the lush location.

Hidden Valley Garden, near Par, is a new Mediterranean style garden that specialises in cultivating perennial plants for sale. Visitors are welcome to wonder around this private garden haven, open between March 20th – 31st October.

Tregrehan Gardens

Tregrehan House, Par,  has been in the hands of the Carlyon family since 1565.  It has a renowned collection of trees and camellias.  Open March - May and one day per week thereafter during the summer.
